Oatley was born on 18 July 1978 in Sydney, Australia.〔 She attended St James Primary School in New South Wales before going to high school at Scone Grammar School in New South Wales and St Catherines High School in Victoria. She moved to Germany in 1995.〔 , she lives in Gronwohld, Germany.〔
Her grandfather is Robert Oatley. In the Super-Maxi ''Wild Oats XI'', he won the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race five times.〔〔 Her cousin is fellow Australian Olympian Lyndal Oatley.〔
